- Martin Luther King Jr. was born January 15, 1929.
- His mother was a schoolteacher and taught him to read before he was in school.
- At 15, King entered Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia.
- He became a Minister after college, like his father and grand father before him.
- King joined the civil rights movement in the 1950s.
- He participated in many peaceful protests that opposed racism against African-Americans.
- In 1964, King won a Nobel Peace Prize.
- King was assassinated (killed) in Memphis, TN on April 4, 1968 at the Lorraine Motel.
- King gave his famous I Have a Dream speech August 28, 1963 and we celebrate that day every year; that day is called “Dream Day.”
- We celebrate the man on Martin Luther King Day every January, the month he was born.
- The Lorraine Motel is now part of the National Civil Rights Museum.
